About Fees

What is the cancellation policy?

To avoid cancellation fees, we require at least 24 hours’ notice before your scheduled appointment. We understand that life can be unpredictable, which is why at My Wellness Therapy, cancellation fees are structured to accommodate you.

Cancellation fee policy:

  • Less than 24 hours’ notice: 100% of the session rate

  • No-show appointment: 100% of the session rate

  • Illness or emergency: One-time exemption; thereafter, 24 hours’ notice is required

Payments are required before the start of the session. Regardless of payment method, a credit card on file is required before booking your first session. This is to hold your appointment only and it will not be charged until you arrive or the cancellation policy is not withheld.

If paying by eTransfer, payment must be received prior to the start of session.

We also accept the following payment types: Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Discover. You will be emailed with a receipt after the payment is processed.

Unfortunately, we are unable to accept checks or cash at this time.

Insurance Coverage Information

Every extended insurance plan is different, so we recommend contacting your insurance provider directly to confirm whether your services at My Wellness Therapy are covered.

(For example, one person may be covered under Manulife, while another may not.)

To ensure a smooth process, we suggest reaching out to your insurer before your session to confirm coverage and reimbursement eligibility.

Questions to ask your insurance provider:

  • Does my plan cover psychotherapy provided by a Registered Psychotherapist, Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying), or Social Worker?

  • Which psychotherapy services are covered? (Individual, couples, or family counselling)

  • Is a physician referral required for coverage?

  • Who is covered under my plan? (Spouse, children, or dependents)

  • What percentage of the session fee will my plan cover? (Some plans cover a portion, e.g., 80% per session)

  • What is the maximum annual coverage for psychotherapy?

After each session, you will receive a detailed receipt containing all the information required to submit to your insurer for reimbursement.

If reimbursement is not received, keep your receipts, as they may be used to claim psychotherapy as a medical expense on your personal income tax filing.

Please note: Psychotherapists in Ontario typically do not offer direct billing to insurance providers.

Online & In-Person Therapy

Is online therapy a good option?

Online therapy is as effective as in person therapy. What is most important with any format of therapy is the strong therapeutic relationship between you and your therapist. Online therapy is a good option when coming in-person is not feasible, when you have dependents at home, and it is also more convenient.

Online Therapy vs. In-Person Therapy

Not necessarily. Online therapy and in-person therapy are generally the same cost, as their effectiveness is comparable. In fact, online therapy can be more cost-effective for clients since there are no transportation expenses.

While there are therapy apps or programs available at lower costs than traditional therapy, their effectiveness is often uncertain, and they are usually not covered by insurance.

At My Wellness Therapy, we provide online therapy with a Registered Psychotherapist, which is covered by most insurance providers and allows you to save on travel time and expenses, while receiving professional, evidence-based support.

About Therapy

What do we talk about during a consultation?

A consultation is a free 20-minutes phone call where we determine if we are a good fit to work together. You would get the opportunity to ask questions regarding therapy approach, services offered, fees, and more, as well as discussing your concerns and hope for therapy.

Length and Frequency of Therapy

The length of therapy depends on your goals, progress, and satisfaction with the process. Typically, meaningful progress is made in 6–12 sessions, though this varies depending on how consistently you apply the skills learned and whether you feel ready to manage life independently.

We recommend attending a minimum of five sessions to determine if the therapist-client relationship is a good fit. This also allows you to experience how therapy works and practice new skills in a supportive environment.

For optimal progress, sessions are usually scheduled weekly or every other week, giving you time to practice and integrate strategies between appointments.

At My Wellness Therapy, we view therapy as an investment in your well-being rather than an expense. Ultimately, the choice of session frequency—weekly, bi-weekly, or as needed—is entirely yours, tailored to what works best for your growth and schedule.

Preparing for Your First Session

Attending your first therapy session can feel nerve-wracking, and we want to make sure your experience is as smooth and comfortable as possible.

Here’s how to prepare:

  1. Find a safe and private space – Choose an environment where you feel comfortable speaking openly and won’t be interrupted.

  2. Check your internet connection – A stable connection helps ensure the session runs smoothly.

  3. Complete your forms – Fill out the consent and intake forms ahead of time if possible. If you don’t have a chance, we can complete them together during your session. Completing them beforehand allows us to focus more on your goals.

  4. Bring a pen and notepad (optional but recommended) – Taking notes can help you remember key insights, strategies, and homework discussed during the session, making your time and investment in mental health even more valuable.

By following these steps, you’ll be ready to get the most out of your first session and start your journey toward growth and healing.

What if My Partner Doesn’t Want to Attend?

It’s completely okay if your partner chooses not to attend therapy. They may have their own reasons, and that’s understandable.

Individual relationship counselling can still be highly effective. Through therapy, you can improve your communication skills, increase happiness, and learn practical techniques that you can apply in your relationship—even on your own.

The best part? You don’t have to share a therapist. As your partner sees the positive changes in you and how therapy supports your growth, they may become more open to joining in the future.

Medical Notes and Documentation

Providing a medical note requires a clear understanding of your situation, which our therapists develop through your sessions. To ensure an accurate and thorough assessment, we require a minimum of five sessions before a medical note can be issued. This allows us to make recommendations that are appropriate and tailored to your mental health needs.

Please note that letters, forms, and other documents are subject to a fee.

Letters and Report Writing

Preparing letters and reports requires time outside of sessions to review notes, summarize progress, and carefully prepare documentation. Fees reflect the professional time, expertise, and responsibility involved, and are outlined in the consent forms.

Therapists can only provide letters that accurately reflect your therapeutic work and are appropriate within their professional role. They cannot provide diagnostic or medical letters that require a formal assessment.

Your therapist will confirm the fee with you and send an invoice securely through our system.

About Getting the Right Support

What type of therapist is right for me?

Choosing the Right Therapist

There are many types of therapists to choose from, so it’s important to start by identifying the issue you’d like to work on. Seeking a therapist who specializes in your specific concern can make therapy more effective. For example, if you want to work on trauma, a therapist who primarily treats eating disorders may not be the best fit.

Other factors to consider include the therapist’s gender, experience, therapeutic approaches, and whether they are covered by your insurance plan. Many therapists also offer free consultation calls, which can help you decide if they are the right fit for you.

At My Wellness Therapy, our team specializes in relationship issues, relational trauma, narcissistic abuse recovery, attachment wounds, depression, anxiety, and more. We work with adults, couples, and families over the age of 16, providing a safe and supportive environment tailored to your needs.

Choosing the Right Type of Therapy

The type of therapy that is most effective depends on you as an individual and the reasons you are seeking support. There are many approaches, including somatic-based therapy, cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), trauma-informed therapy, holistic therapy, existential therapy, and more.

While your input is important, in most cases, your therapist will recommend the approach that best suits your goals and needs. This ensures that your sessions are tailored, effective, and aligned with your personal growth and healing journey.

Psychotherapy vs. Counselling

The terms psychotherapy and counselling are often used interchangeably, though there are slight differences.

  • Psychotherapy focuses on treating psychological disorders and mental health challenges, such as depression, anxiety, PTSD, and more.

  • Counselling emphasizes wellness support, offering guidance, insights, and clarity to promote personal growth and well-being.

At My Wellness Therapy, we provide both psychotherapy and counselling, tailored to your unique needs and goals.

Psychotherapist, Psychologist, and Psychiatrist: What’s the Difference?

The main differences between a psychotherapist, psychologist, and psychiatrist lie in their education, scope of practice, and approach to treatment. All three can provide talk therapy, but their training and capabilities vary:

Education:

  • Psychotherapist: Master’s degree or higher

  • Psychologist: PhD or PsyD

  • Psychiatrist: MD

Scope of Practice:

  • Psychotherapist: Provides therapy but cannot diagnose

  • Psychologist: Can assess, diagnose, and provide therapy

  • Psychiatrist: Can assess, diagnose, provide therapy, and prescribe medication

Training Focus:

  • Psychotherapist: Counselling and therapy techniques

  • Psychologist: Clinical research, assessment, and therapy

  • Psychiatrist: Medical treatment, including medication for mental health conditions

Before seeking help, it’s important to know what you need and are looking for. A consultation call can help you decide which professional is the right fit.

At My Wellness Therapy, our team consists of Registered Psychotherapists with the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario, offering evidence-based talk therapy tailored to your needs.
